Physics is the method by which we model the universe, from the very large (galactic superclusters) to the very small (neutrinos) and most things in between. At Tiree High School all students study some Physics as part of the Science outcomes for Curriculum for Excellence until the end of S3, and it is a popular choice for students in S4 and beyond. Our main aim in teaching Physics is to give students the skills to look analytically at the world around them, to consider how one thing affects another, and to use mathematics to quantify their analysis. We use practical work both to illustrate the mathematical models we are discussing and to encourage students to build models of their own.

Our study of Physics mostly falls under the headings of classical mechanics, electricity, and radiation. These topics increase in depth as students progress, studying National 4 or 5 in S4 and, given sufficient aptitude in both Physics and Mathematics, continuing to Higher and Advanced Higher. We also introduce some work on Cosmology, quantum and particle physics.

Physics is primarily taught in our recently refurbished laboratory having, in addition to the usual classroom features, an airtrack, van de Graaff generator, EHT power supply, ripple tank and a host of other specialised equipment. We have access to data logging equipment and also make use of video cameras and motion tracking technology to observe experiments. Physics is taught by Mr. Bennett.
