Welcome to the English Department!

All pupils study English to improve their skills in Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening and we have a wide range of materials, equipment, resources and texts to stimulate our pupils’ creation and production, analysis and evaluation. English is always demanding as we challenge and develop the imagination, the literacy and the social skills of pupils. Although there is rigour in achieving accuracy, English is stimulating and enjoyable and we try to allow as much personalisation and choice as possible.

Pupils will work on developing their Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening skills throughout the course. They will experience texts from a range of genres:

* Prose
* Poetry
* Drama
* Media
* Non-fiction

In each unit of work, pupils will take part in a range of tasks and activities both individually and as part of a group. They will gain a deeper understanding of the texts through reading and listening activities, and they will then be able to show this understanding by producing written and spoken work. The work produced will go towards creating a portfolio of evidence to show their achievements. This helps to fully prepare pupils for the transition to the senior phase.

Progression Pathways in English

Most pupils will follow a progression pathway in the Senior Phase which allows them to continue developing their English and Literacy skills at the appropriate level. Most pupils will be coursed at National 4 or 5 in S4, allowing progression to National 5 or Higher in S5. Pupils who successfully achieve Higher in S5 will be offered the opportunity to continue their English studies at Advanced Higher in S6.
