Philosophy:

Physical Education at Tiree High School is concerned with more than sports and games.  Its clear goal is to contribute to the students physical, intellectual, emotional and social maturity. The aim is to help young people cultivate an active, healthy lifestyle through activities that are enjoyable, at the same time as developing the teamwork, co-operation and personal engagement that are vital in the modern workplace.

Aims and Objectives:

  • To build on student experiences though Primary to High School in developing a balanced Physical Education programme which would contribute to the total education, health and wellbeing of the individual pupil, encouraging pupils to develop a confidence and commitment to PE and sport within school and the wider community.

  • To provide a range of individual, partner and team experiences, both through the Curriculum and sports clubs, where a pupil can achieve and demonstrate the desire to improve, irrespective of ability, in the process of planning, performing and evaluating physical activities. The programme also providing pupils regular opportunities to monitor their own fitness levels.

  • To provide pupils with the opportunity to develop a level of personal competence, skills and tactics. This would lead to more effective and enjoyable participation allowing them to take on roles and responsibilities including leadership, coaching and officiating.

  • To ensure that pupils, at all times, have the knowledge to use equipment in a safe and responsible manner.

  • To provide a programme of study which will not only meet the demands of the Curriculum for Excellence but provide opportunities for students to experience and enjoy an ever increasing range of competitive, creative and challenge type activities.

  • To instil a lifelong enjoyment and appreciation of PE and sport. To develop an understanding of how PE and sport contribute to a balanced, healthy and active lifestyle, and how different activities affect their fitness, health and self-esteem.
