Our Secondary Gaelic Department offers courses to both Gaelic learners and Gaelic Medium pupils. All pupils study the language up to the end of S3 as part of their Broad General Education and beyond this pupils may choose to study the language through to Advanced Higher in S6.

  • The Gàidhlig course is designed for pupils who have come through Gaelic Medium Primary Education and aims to further develop skills in Talking, Listening, Reading and Writing through engagement in a variety of topics and projects.

  • The Gaelic Learners course is for pupils who have come through English Medium Primary education. The course allows pupils to further develop skills in talking, reading , listening and writing whilst learning a new language.

Learning Gaelic contributes to our pupils’ wider education and life experiences. The study of Gaelic supports us to gain a deeper understanding of Gaelic language, culture and heritage.

Our pupils will use a variety of skills whilst learning the language and use different technologies to encourage them on their learning journey.

Each year our pupils have the opportunity to take part in a national Gaelic film making competition; FilmG. They learn many new skills and are involved in the film-making process from beginning to end; script writing, camera work, sound production, acting and editing.

Gaelic in the Primary

Pupils from P5-7 who are not in the Gaelic Medium class also have the opportunity to learn the language. They have a weekly lesson with the Secondary Gaelic teacher and learn a wide variety of topics.
